RESTON, VA: The Zoological Association of America Board of Directors and leadership team are sharing dynamic and constructive changes to the organization’s leadership structure in the months ahead.

Dr. Kelly George, ZAA Executive Director, has announced her plans to pursue opportunities outside of the ZAA organization, with her tenure officially concluding on August 31, 2026. Betsey Brewer, ZAA Board Chair, points to the impacts of Dr. George’s research on the intricate human-animal relationship and welfare principles that has enriched our understanding and practices within managed care environments and our zoo communities. Dr. George’s expertise and insights have shaped many initiatives, particularly through her leadership of ZAA’s Animal Welfare Committee.

“I would like to thank all of you for your support and kindness in my tenure as Executive Director. Meeting and working with all of you has been the highlight of my time with ZAA,” shared Dr. George. “I would like to thank the ZAA Board, all the committee chairs & members, Tom Albert, Vanessa Gagne, and Jeff Holland for sharing their experience and expertise as we collectively helped ZAA grow. Additionally, I especially want to thank my great staff, Tatiana Jourdan, Kimber Hendrix, and Melissa Shepherd, for their extreme professionalism and who have all contributed to moving ZAA forward. I am excited for the next chapter in my career, and I hope to stay in touch!”

“As we say goodbye to our dear colleague and friend, Dr. Kelly George, we can't help but reflect on the incredible impact she has had on all of us at the Zoological Association of America,” said Brewer. “Kelly’s passion and dedication have not only guided ZAA to new heights but have also inspired each of us to strive for excellence in our work.”

The ZAA Board of Directors will be initiating a search for a new Executive Director and will keep the Membership informed as the process progresses. Dr. George will be working jointly with the Board and the administrative team during her final months to ensure a smooth transition into ZAA’s next chapter.

“Dr. George, thank you for your unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and the significant strides you have made for ZAA. You will be greatly missed, and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors,” concluded Brewer.
